CCS and STRATAGEM partnering on a demonstrator for automated inspection and repair of composite aircraft structures

Paris, 21 June 2019: Today, at the Paris Airshow 2019 Composite Cluster Singapore Pte Ltd (CCS) and STRATAGEM Innovation Singapore Pte Ltd (STRATAGEM) signed a contract for the proof of concept of a demonstrator for automated inspection and repair of critical composite structures (“LAIRD”).


The 1-year program will be conducted in cooperation with Testia Asia Pacific at the Composite Application Center (CAC), a CCS led Singapore-based international field lab with participation of international companies and research entities that cover all parts of the composite value chain, including material, software, equipment, process technologies, as well as manufacturing, maintenance, product development and training. The CAC field lab will ensure that Stratagem and CCS can tap into the latest technologies and create best of industry solutions, while at the same time support a sustainable talent pool and skilled workforce for the future. The participation of Testia in the program will provide valuable domain knowledge and technology in aerostructure inspection. 
Stratagem Innovation Singapore is a subsidiary of the Dutch Stratagem Group which has been involved in the development of a new generation of robotic solutions for surface treatment of Aircraft and helicopters over the years. 
The relationship between CCS and STRATAGEM will strengthen the research and development relationship between the Netherlands and Singapore and will contribute to the ambitions of both countries in the field of aerospace, export and focus on SME development. The LAIRD project is supported by Enterprise Singapore, an Agency of the Singapore Government that champions enterprise development of start-ups and SMEs. 
LAIRD will be part of a new generation of automated solutions for the aircraft MRO industry that will contribute to its long-term sustainability, will anticipate on the significant increase in critical composite structures and will overcome the increasing shortage of skilled professionals. If successful than the current Proof of Concept phase will be followed by a 2-year Proof of Validation phase. 


CCS developing composite wings for Eviation’s electric aircraft

Paris, 19 June 2019: Composite Cluster Singapore (CCS) today announced that it is working with Eviation Aircraft on ‘Alice’ – a fully electric aircraft structure that is currently showcased at the 53rd International Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, France.


CCS is continuing to expand its activities in the electric propulsion aircraft, urban air mobility and unmanned vehicles sector. Leveraging the Composite Application Center (CAC) consortium announced in 2018, CCS is spearheading high-impact projects, such as the wing development for Eviation’s ‘Alice’ aircraft.

‘Alice’ is a battery electric passenger aircraft under development by Israeli Eviation Aircraft. Built 95% from composite materials, it will be controlled by fly-by-wire and powered by three electric engines, in a wingtip and pusher configuration. The nine passenger aircraft with a range of 640 miles / 1,000 km at cruise speed of 240 knots, will have much lower direct operating cost than turboprop aircraft.

CCS has designed the wing and belly fairings specifically for Eviation and delivered the first shipset for assembly to Vannes in France. The entire CCS team has been very much engaged in this project from its inception until today and is currently working on the second prototype.

This highlights Singapore’s capabilities as an aviation hub in the region as the wing assembly was designed and manufactured locally. Specifically, aircraft with electric propulsion paves the way for a new era in the aerospace industry and Singapore authorities are supporting this development actively.

CCS has been working closely with Enterprise Singapore, the government agency championing enterprise development, on its growth plans, including the development of the prototype. “This is the first of many global innovation projects in the advanced materials space that can be done in Singapore.” said Ho Chi Bao, Director (Advanced Manufacturing), Enterprise Singapore. “Additionally, the project is an outcome from the collaboration between Singapore companies and international partners, where they jointly develop capabilities in composite material design and manufacturing. Apart from aerospace, their new competencies could be applied in other industries locally and overseas.

Singapore, 1 November 2018:  SCG signs MoU to join Singapore based Composite Application Center (CAC) consortium.
